On Friday, November 27, the Christmas Craft Village on the Whalehead grounds closes at 4 p.m., and Corolla Village Christmas opens down the lane at 4 p.m. that same afternoon. Nobody announced the timing as a plan. Still, it shapes the whole weekend. The free events line up end to end inside Historic Corolla. The one event that needs a reservation already shows most of its dates sold out on the official listing. The Currituck Beach Lighthouse ends its 2026 season three days later, on Monday, November 30.
So the planning really happens in October. Most of what follows needs no tickets. The pieces that do need one are nearly gone.
The reservation that filled first
The Whalehead Christmas Candlelight Tours run Friday and Saturday evenings from the weekend after Thanksgiving through December 19. Each tour runs 5 to 6:30 p.m. and costs $20 per person. Reservations are required and can't be refunded. The official listing marks six of the eight dates sold out: November 27 and 28, December 4, 5, and 11, and December 19. Two evenings are still open: Saturday, December 12, and Friday, December 18.
Whalehead says the tour shows the mansion decorated the way Edward Collings Knight, Jr. and his wife kept it in the 1920s, with greenery, Christmas trees, fruit, candy, and nuts. The tour also passes through the newly designed Starkey room exhibit. Each evening includes live music on the original Steinway, which was custom designed for Mrs. Knight, and guests get a holiday treat at the end. The published pianist list puts Miles Daniels on December 12 and John Buford on December 18.
You book by phone at 252-453-9040, or by email at [email protected]. Tours begin promptly at 5 p.m. Seats sell out quickly, so call to check before you plan around a date. Availability can change between the listing and your call.
With the Thanksgiving weekend tours already full, the rest of that weekend is built from events that need no tickets at all.
Friday, November 27, hour by hour
The day after Thanksgiving uses almost every hour of daylight and runs well past dark. Here is the order:
9 a.m. The Currituck Beach Lighthouse opens for climbing. It runs daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. this season, weather permitting, and it closes on Thanksgiving Day itself.
10 a.m. The Corolla Wild Horse Fund Museum and Gift Shop opens at 1130E Corolla Village Road. Its regular hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
11 a.m. The free Christmas Craft Village opens at Whalehead, 1100 Club Road. It's a one-day outdoor show with fine arts and crafts, handmade cosmetics, baked goods, and food vendors. The Northern Outer Banks lists this as the 11th annual Craft Village, held every year on the first Friday after Thanksgiving.
4 p.m. The Craft Village closes, and the Wild Horse Fund museum closes at its regular hour too. At the same moment, Corolla Village Christmas opens for food, shopping, and activities. Wreath decorating with Our Epic Project's Our Epic Evergreens runs from 4 to 8 p.m.
4:30 p.m. Live music starts by the food court.
5 p.m. The Litmus Jazz Trio plays at Corolla Village Inn. The lighthouse closes for the day at the same hour.
5:30 and 6:30 p.m. Santa holds his two holiday book readings. He's at a marked station from 4 to 8 p.m. for photos and visits.
8 p.m. The village closes for the night.
The Craft Village and the village event run back to back, with no gap between them. The 4 p.m. switch also moves the crowd. Daytime is spread out across the Whalehead grounds. The evening event follows one route through the village shops.
A quarter mile of village after dark
Corolla Village Christmas is set up as a quarter-mile walk along Corolla Village Lane. It starts at Schoolhouse Lane and winds through the local shops. The Kind Cup presents the event and The Northern Outer Banks sponsors it. The listing promises more than 30 local artists, craft hot chocolate, handmade photo booths, live music under café lights in the open dining court, food trucks and local food vendors, a Letters to Santa station, and a Reindeer Ring Toss. Santa's readings take place at the village bookstore. The event is free, with no tickets.
The bookstore is the Island Bookstore at 1130 Corolla Village Road, which stays open year-round. Several other businesses sit in or near the historic village. They include The Kind Cup Coffee & Art, Corolla Village BBQ, The Beer Garden, Spry Creek, and The Juice Jar. Last year's food page for the event named Corolla Village BBQ, Garden Pizzeria & Deli, Kind Cup Coffee, and Johnny D's Goods. The 2026 vendor list hasn't been published yet, so treat those names as a likely lineup, not a confirmed one.
The wreath station is run with Our Epic Project. The event listing says the station supports local charities. The organizers haven't said which programs get the money, so ask at the table.
This is a returning event. A listing from last year shows Corolla Village Christmas running on November 28 and 29, 2025. In 2026 it falls on November 27 and 28, which lines Friday up with the Craft Village at Whalehead.
Where the cars go
The event FAQ lists three parking areas:
- The Twiddy check-in building on Schoolhouse Lane, which is closest to where the village walk begins
- Whalehead Club Park, where the Craft Village is held earlier in the day
- The 4x4 beach lot on Persimmon Street
The FAQ doesn't mention a shuttle. If you spend the afternoon at the Craft Village, you can leave your car at Whalehead Club Park and walk over at 4 p.m. without moving it. That's why the back-to-back timing is so handy.
Saturday repeats the village, then the lighthouse closes the season
On Saturday, November 28, the village runs the same schedule. It opens at 4 p.m., wreath decorating runs until 8, music starts at 4:30, the Litmus Jazz Trio plays at Corolla Village Inn at 5, and Santa reads in the evening. Saturday is also the last day of the weekend the Wild Horse Fund museum is open. It's closed Sundays and Mondays.
After that, only the lighthouse is left. The Currituck Beach Lighthouse's 2026 season runs from March 21 to November 30, so the season's last climbs fall on Sunday, November 29, and Monday, November 30. A climb costs $13. You pay at the site, because advance and online tickets aren't offered. The schedule closes the lighthouse in severe weather. If a storm comes through late in the month, those two days could be the last climbs of the year, or there might not be any.
What stays open into December
After that weekend, Historic Corolla thins out to a few fixed points. The Island Bookstore stays open year-round. The Wild Horse Fund museum keeps its Tuesday-through-Saturday hours. The Whalehead Candlelight Tours continue on December weekends. Dates are listed through December 19, and December 12 and 18 are the only ones the listing doesn't mark as sold out.
For anyone in Corolla over the holiday, the October to-do list is short:
- Call Whalehead about December 12 or December 18 if a candlelight tour is part of your plan.
- Plan any lighthouse climb for November 27 through 30, and check the weather before you go.
- Plan Friday the 27th around 4 p.m., the hour the Craft Village closes and the Village Christmas opens.
Whether you're opening a second home for the holidays or hosting family in Corolla for the long weekend, the 4 p.m. handoff is easier with someone local to ask.
